Antique French Pewter Enema Syringe with Wooden Plunger c.1800s

The use of enemas, or clystering, was an often overused medical treatment for many ailments. Simple piston syringe enemas or clysters were in use by the 1400s, and continued to be used into the 1800s. From the 1600s onwards, enemas were mainly designed for self administration at home. Many such as this one were French, due to the wide usage of the enema in France. This is an example of quite a large pewter enema syringe with a wooden plunger.
