Odd Mountain is an unusual business with unusual hours. Right now, we are open to the public every weekend, Saturday and Sunday, from 11am until 5pm. Private shopping appointments are also available on Mondays and Fridays. These hours are subject to change.
If you're planning on visiting on a weekend, there's no requirement to book. As long as you show up between 11am and 5pm on Saturday or Sunday, you'll be able to enter.
If you want some more time and space to enjoy your visit, it's recommended that you book a private shopping appointment, available Mondays and Fridays.
If you're traveling from afar and have your heart set on visiting Odd Mountain on a weekend, please check ahead using our contact form in case of any planned or unplanned closures.
Any updates or amendments to our regular hours will be updated on our Google business page.
Odd Mountain is located on busy Leura Mall (number 147) but our secret doorway can be hidden in plain sight if you don't know what you're looking for.
GPS and Google Maps can get confused, so it's best to navigate to Leura Mall and then follow these instructions: Position yourself on the same side of the street as the train station (the opposite side to Woolworths). Our doorway is towards the top of the street, further uphill than Moontree but not as far up as Geekdom. Find us next to the entrance to the Chelsea Cake Shop. Don't look for an under-awning sign, but do look for our lightbox if you're heading uphill.
Our new shop is located at the top of a staircase and therefore accessibility is limited. There is a hand rail extending the entire length of the stairs, but the steps are narrow and steep. Help to carry your purchases (or anything you brought with you) down the stairs is always available.
Please get in touch if you would like to know how we can help you experience the shop even if you can't visit due to accessibility issues.
In-store pick up is available at checkout! If you select this method, you'll be notified by email when your order is ready and you'll have the chance to organise your collection. If you need something ready ASAP, please get in touch, preferably before ordering if you can!
Right now, you will definitely see some things in store that you cannot find online, whether they be fragile items that can't be shipped, or things hidden away in the back of cabinets.
Reliable sourcing of antiques and oddities that appeal to me and my customers is always a challenge, but never more so than in the last couple of years. It's my instinct to preserve some of the most interesting pieces for display in the store, for fear of running out of things for visitors to look at.
Nevertheless, my aim is to close the gap between what's available in store and what's available online. I'm working constantly towards putting my whole catalogue on the website, and while you will see more and more of these special 'museum' pieces appear online, it's still very much a work in progress.
I tend to avoid the blanket term 'ethically sourced' as ethics are personal and unique to each individual. I source everything in line with my own personal ethics which dictate my policy:
My policy is that I will never knowingly sell or stock anything that has caused a living creature to be killed for the sake of display. In addition to this, specimens must be sustainably sourced, species of least concern and non-native to Australia.
Find the rest of my statement here and decide for yourself if my ethics align with yours.
Displayed specimens (frames, domes, jars etc) should be kept out of direct sunlight to preserve the colours of the specimen and any botanicals.
To prevent your framed specimens from attracting any destructive pests, it's good practice to periodically treat your frames and the area around them with an insect surface spray, or hide camphor-based silverfish and moth repellent hangers nearby. If you ever notice any bug activity within a display, seal and freeze it immediately for a week to kill off any infestation.
Unmounted specimens should be kept somewhere dry, preferably in a sealed container, until you are ready to display them. The cardboard and tissue packaging can attract and trap moisture when the weather is damp or humid. This is not intended to be their forever home, so if you need help with ideas for displaying your unmounted specimens, please get in touch!
Mystery Boxes are not always available to order online.
When I know I have enough exciting bits and pieces in stock to fill them with and keep them high-quality and interesting, I offer made-to-order Mystery Boxes with a degree of customisation, themed around nature and natural curiosities.
Sometimes if I can't offer these, I can still make and release pre-made boxes, which usually follow the theme of natural curiosities, but can sometimes extend into other themes represented in the shop. Though I'd like to offer these regularly or on some kind of schedule, it's not always possible.
Mystery Boxes generally contain more than 40% extra value on top of what you pay, and can take an hour or more each to make. Inside the box you'll receive a list that includes the description and RRP of each item, sealed with a spoiler warning.
Odd Mountain's range is ever-changing and unpredictable. Many items are one-of-a-kind, while others can be replicated or reordered.
If you missed out on something or you've got your heart set on something you've seen in store, on our social media or on the website, you can register your interest by submitting our contact form.
It might be possible to find what you're after, and we should be able to give you an indication as to whether what you desire can/will be restocked.
Odd Mountain generally doesn't have the capacity to accept custom orders, though you are welcome to bring us your ideas.
We're also not taxidermists so unfortunately we can't preserve your pet budgie, but we are always happy to consider your enquiry and point you in the best direction. If you don't know where to start, you're welcome to send us an email and we'll help you out as best we can.
My most frequently asked question, at least from customers in store: Where do you get all this weird stuff?
I have no idea how to give a short answer to that. I've always been a collector. I know what kinds of things I like, so I often seek them out intentionally, which makes it a bit easier. I source from all over the world as well as locally, and occasionally things just come to me.
If you've got something you think I might be interested in, the best thing to do is to fill in our contact form or email directly to hello@oddmountain.com so that you can attach photographs of your wares. Please include your expectations for price, keeping in mind that as a retailer, I'm not always in a position to afford what a collector might pay, and sometimes don't have any available budget for purchasing.
Bulk lots and entire collections are particularly of interest, and donations are always appreciated.
Unfortunately I can't accept items brought into the store with no notice, so please email ahead with as much detail as possible.
If you've got a wholesale product you think I might like, please also get in contact as above, with as much detail as possible about your product/range and pricing.
